After the NEET PG 2026 result is out, the most important thing for students is to understand their score and admission chances. NEET PG 2026 cutoff is 262 marks for General/ABS candidates, 244 marks for General PB, and 226 marks for SC, SC and ST candidates. But here is an important point to understand: this is a qualifying cutoff, not an actual admission cutoff.
If you have already achieved a qualifying mark, it means you can be eligible for the counselling process. But for MD/MS seats your rank, category, preferred specialization, college, quota and available seats are equally important.
What is NEET PG 2026 Cutoff ?
NEET PG 2026 Cutoff is the minimum qualifying benchmark required for a candidate to participate in the postgraduate medical admission process. General/EWS candidates need to meet the 50th percentile, while SC, ST and OBC candidates need to meet the 40th percentile. General PwBD candidates have a 45th percentile requirement.
While checking the cutoff, students should understand the difference between the NEET PG qualifying cutoff and the actual admission cutoff. Merely clearing the qualifying cutoff does not guarantee admission to a particular MD/MS branch or medical college.
Category-Wise NEET PG 2026 Cutoff
Below is the category wise cutoff of NEET PG 2026:
| Category | Minimum Qualifying Criteria | NEET PG 2026 Cutoff Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS | 50th percentile | 262 |
| General PwBD | 45th percentile | 244 |
| SC/ST/OBC | 40th percentile | 226 |
| SC/ST/OBC PwBD | 40th percentile | 226 |
These marks represent a qualifying cutoff. The score or closing rank required for actual admission may vary depending on the college and specialization.
NEET PG 2026 Cutoff for OBC
For OBC candidates, the NEET PG 2026 Cutoff is 226 marks, corresponding to the 40th percentile. The qualifying marks for SC and ST candidates are also 226.
However, if you are from the OBC category and have scored around 226 marks, you should not assume your admission possibilities based only on your qualifying status. Your actual options depend on your NEET PG rank, category, available seats, preferred branches and choices filled during NEET PG Counselling.
Qualifying Cutoff vs Admission Cutoff
This difference is very important for NEET PG aspirants.
| Qualifying cutoff | Admission cutoff |
|---|---|
| Qualifying cutoff means that you have achieved the minimum eligibility benchmarks of your examination. After this you can participate in the admission counselling process, subject to applicable rules. | Admission cutoff refers to the competitive score/rank required for seat allotment in a particular college and specialization. It can be significantly different from the qualifying cutoff. |
For example, 262 marks in the General category may be enough to qualify, but it does not mean that the candidate will get a seat in highly preferred branches like MD General Medicine or MD Radiology.
The NEET PG admission cutoff can be much higher than the qualifying benchmark because it depends on competition, college preference, branch demand, category and available seats.
Does Clearing the Cutoff Guarantee an MD/MS Seat?
No. Clearing the NEET PG 2026 cutoff provides eligibility for the admission process but does not guarantee an item/s seat.
Factors like candidate’s rank, category, college preference, specialization, quota, available seats and counseling rounds are considered during actual seat allotment.
For this reason, students should not focus only on “clearing the cutoff.” Preparing realistic college and branch options according to their rank is more useful during counseling.
What is the role of NEET PG rank?
After qualifying the NEET PG 2026 cutoff, your rank plays a major role in admission planning. With a better rank, your preferred specialization and options for a reputed medical college can generally improve.
If your rank is comparatively lower, students can also consider private medical colleges, deemed universities, different specializations, and subsequent counseling rounds.
So, don’t just look at your rank as a number. Compare it with the college, branch, and budget to formulate your admission strategy.
The Role of Cutoffs in NEET PG Counseling
The role of cutoffs during NEET PG counseling isn’t limited to eligibility. The closing ranks for different colleges and branches can change with each counseling round.
Options not available in the first round may become available in subsequent rounds due to seat movement, resignation, and choice preferences. Therefore, students should carefully follow the rules and seat availability for each round of counseling.
On what factors does the admission cutoff depend?
The qualifying marks of NEET PG 2026 Cutoff provide a fixed benchmark, but the actual admission competition is influenced by multiple factors.
Important factors includes:
- NEET PG rank
- Candidate’s category
- Preferred specialization
- Demand for Medical college
- Government, private or deemed institution
- All India Quota or state quota
- Available PG seats
- Choice filling
- Counselling round
- Students’s branch preferences
For example, MD Radiology, MD General Medicine, and other high-demand branches generally have higher competition. Therefore, the closing ranks for these branches can be quite different from the qualifying cutoff.
What to do after Cutoff ?
If you have qualified the NEET PG 2026 Cutoff, focus on admission planning now.
First, check your rank and category. Then prioritize preferred branches. Then, choose the options available in government, private, and deemed medical colleges.
If you’re planning MD/MS admission in India, just looking at the college name isn’t enough. Fees, specialization, clinical exposure, location, seat category, and counseling possibilities should also be considered.
